The Tour De Coop!

There are some pretty solid stereotypes about the South.  And Savannah is pretty solidly in the Southern camp.  But something that has surprised me in our few months here is finding quite a range of little mini cultures in the city.  And, also surprising, has been realizing how hipster Savannah itself is.  It's really like a little Portland - high-waisted pants and glasses-wearing design college girls drinking their kombucha out of mason jars as they bike through the park past a drum circle, slack-liners, and a community of hammock-hangers.  May be exaggerating a tiiiiiny bit there, but you get it.

So, in Savannah, you get things like the Tour de Coop - an annual tour given by the Urban Gardener's Association of the backyard chicken coops of the city.  And Paul, ever the hopeful chicken farmer, was super gung-ho about it when I told him about the announcement I saw.  So, today we were on the Tour and it was a nice little adventure.  We went out to a bunch of marshside houses on the islands and got all excited about chickens. It's what we do now I guess.    The one above was our favorite (look at the tiny gridded windows!).   And it was fun to be part of a big community event (maybe 50 people came) and strange to think about how this is now, you know, our actual community.  We aren't temp residents just passing through and observing.  Time to start investing ourselves, you know?

I figure the Urban Gardening Association is a good place to start.
